Karavomilos is found just outside Sami in the direction of Agia Efimia. A small pretty fishing village with a long, narrow shingle beach and lovely views across to Ithaca. Karavomilos is named after the local water mill, where there is a small circular lake. Surrounded by lush vegetation the area attracts plenty of wild life including ducks, swans and herons. The lake is part of the phenomenon where fresh water flows underground from Katavothres in Argostoli, to the Melissani Lake, continuing on to Karavomilos. The village has a choice of tavernas, supermarkets and bakeries and from the water mill a lovely walk can be enjoyed along the beach into Sami itself.

In and around Karavomilos
Very close to Karavomilos, and well signposted, you will arrive at one of Kefalonia’s famous natural sights, Melissani Lake. The subterranean lake is a beautiful sight to behold, with crystal clear water sparkling as sunlight falls from the aperture in the roof. Visitors can tour the lake with one of the guides in a small boat and admire the beautiful changing colours of the lake which is over 20 metres deep in parts.
The magnificent Drogarati Cave is really impressive. You can admire the beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, whilst descending the numerous steps into the cave. The interior of the cave is large enough to host a concert and has done so in the past as the acoustic is amazing.
If you travel independently to the Melissani Lake and the Drogarati Cave and find coaches parked when you arrive, take a break and enjoy a coffee at one of the cafes and then enjoy your visit with less people once the coaches have departed.
The Drogarati Cave may not be suitable for small children or those with walking difficulties due to the slippery steps leading down into the cave.
